About Volunteering
ASB and St John - Working Together

St John Volunteers are everyday people who do something very special. They form an essential part of St John in New Zealand. Without their commitment and contribution we simply could not be as involved in caring in the community as we are.

Volunteering with St John is a commitment, but one which is immensely rewarding. You directly contribute to the welfare of your local community, and provide an invaluable service to all New Zealanders. And, you can become part of one of the best-known and most respected organisations in New Zealand: an organisation renowned for its care and compassion, its sensitivity and tolerance.

St John Volunteer work can vary tremendously:

  • If you are working with us in the community, you might be a Caring Caller making a daily friendship telephone call to someone who has little or no contact with friends or family.

  • You could also be a Friend of the Emergency Department working in hospital emergency departments providing comfort, information and support to patients and their relatives.

  • Alternatively as a Youth Leader in our fun and dynamic Youth programme you could be making a positive impact on young people's lives while developing your own professional skills.

  • As an Events Volunteer you could be providing pre-hospital emergency care at rugby, cricket, netball matches, horse shows, golf tournaments and concerts.

  • If you are part of our Ambulance team, you could be involved as a Volunteer Ambulance Officer in an emergency situation, or assisting us to transport people to and from hospital.

  • You could also be a Area Committee Volunteer contributing business, fundraising or administrative skills to support St John activities in your local community.

  • You could become a Hospitaller Club member raising money for the St John Eye Hospital of Jerusalem.

You will also become a valued member of the St John team - and enjoy all the support, friendship and sense of belonging and achievement that comes with that. We will provide all the resources, training and assistance we can to help you do the best job possible. We will also reimburse any reasonable costs that you incur while you are on duty.
