Payroll giving is a valuable and important corporate social responsibility policy tool.
When choosing charities for inclusion in a payroll giving programme, you want to ensure that your company is
choosing well. According to the 2011 Reader's Digest poll, St John is New Zealand's most trusted brand. Encouraging
your staff to support St John ensures that money they donate will directly assist one of New Zealand's oldest and
most important charities.
Our Heritage
In 1885, St John established services in New Zealand to minimise injuries and provide rapid assistance to those
injured or whose health was suddenly impacted in the workplace. It was the beginning of our flagship first-aid
training, events attendance and emergency ambulance services. We continue to provide those same services more
than 125 years later.
However, those services are just part of the bigger St John story. As a major charity, St John has always been
at the forefront of initiating services relevant to the times and communities in which we operate.
St John started District Nursing services in many New Zealand communities. The first Blood Banks were
also started by St John, and we have been a key charity involved in medical and natural disasters across
New Zealand.
Our Community Services
Today, St John provides or partners in the delivery of the following charitable services:
- the St John Caring Caller befriending service which provides a daily telephone call to people isolated or living alone
- St John Friends in Hospitals volunteers who assist and support patients and families in non-clinical ways
- St John Health Shuttles provide volunteer based transport to and from Hospitals and other medical appointments for those who otherwise would find it difficult to attend clinics
- Healthline, the free 24-hour telephone enquiry line for anyone uncertain how to deal with a sudden or developing illness
- Therapy Pets home and hospital visitation service bringing pets into contact with those home-bound or infirm
the St John youth programme for 6 – 18 year-olds.
How your organisation can help
By encouraging your staff to support St John through payroll giving, you help your staff to give more than
they might otherwise afford. For every $15 a participating staff member donates, they will only see their pay
reduce by $10. This is due to the immediate 33% tax rebate applicable to charity donations via payroll giving,
up to the employee's total PAYE payable.
Matching your staff's contributions can be a significant way of partnering with your staff to benefit of the
wider community.
For more information about St John and how we can recognise the support we receive from your organisation, please contact the National Fundraising Manager on 0800 785 646 or email fundraising@stjohn.org.nz.
We cannot deliver care that matters without your help, and it is important for us to thank you and your staff.
